About American Songbird Management and Recovery (ASMAR)
American Songbird is a 501c3 national nonprofit founded by a group of ornithologists in 2020, with an initial focus on threatened and endangered Southwestern birds. ASMAR became active in the Keweenaw Peninsula in 2023 after receiving a large donation specifically for that purpose. The Objectives of the organization are stated in Article II of the Bylaws as follows:
Recognizing the decline of American songbirds, the objectives of AMERICAN SONGBIRD MANAGEMENT AND RECOVERY (ASMAR) are
(a) to preserve native songbird habitat to aid in songbird recovery (including protection, restoration, creation, and maintenance of native habitats);
(b) to conduct scientific research to aid in recovery of rare, declining, threatened, and endangered songbirds (but including all avian species), especially survey and monitoring studies with a focus on breeding biology and on re-expansion and reintroduction (where appropriate) to historic ranges;
(c) to trap parasitic non-native cowbirds to aid in songbird recovery (focusing primarily on topical trapping during peak songbird nesting season, but including winter trapping and research on cowbirds);
(d) to improve techniques of land preservation by demonstrating to others how to do it well, by studying and trying new ways to do it better, and by devising standards and priorities for the preservation of native habitats;
(e) to advance the cause of songbird recovery and native habitat preservation in private enterprise, in government, in the schools, and in other countries;
(f) to advance the foregoing objectives in cooperation with other organizations having similar and related objectives.
